Capt. Brian Rice - As a kid began, Brian began fishing on the Navesink River, using a pair of oars to row a 12-foot aluminum boat and catch snapper blues, weak fish and other small fish teaming the river. Eventually, he graduated to a 16-foot Garvey boat and began bunker chunking for striped bass under the Highlands Bridge in the late ‘80s, when the striped bass population was just starting to rebuild after being decimated from over-fishing. But the bass were still scarce, and catching even one per day was a success. However, the tough fishing honed his skills, forcing him to refine his methods to hook up.
Brian also started trolling on his boat for stripers, and these experiences developed the techniques he uses today to charter for trophy linesiders, which is one of his specialties. In addition, Brian began fishing offshore for big game in the early 90s, earned his captain’s license in 2004, and has presently (almost) fished everywhere from the entire Northeast Coast to the Bahamas and Mexico.
Jersey Devil Charters – A business located in Fair Haven, NJ, Jersey Devil Sportfishing, has grown quickly due to its progressive team. Brian is on the pro staff of Contender boats, Shimano tackle, Power Pro Line, Simrad electronics, AFW/HiSeas and other major companies. Catching big stripers has become one of his specialties; especially bunker chunking and trolling for the trophies on his 31’ Contender powered by twin 250 Yamaha four stroke engines.
Brian is proven tournament winner, placing in the top five in nearly every competition Jersey Devil has entered, winning the top prize in some of the events, including first place in 2006 American Striper Association Tournament in the Highlands. Captain Brian is also an accomplished offshore captain who has put many clients on tuna, mahi, sharks and even some marlin off the Jersey coast.
Captain Brian still resides in Fair Haven with his wife Jacquie, son Jack and daughter Cameron all of which fish and enjoy the waters that Brian has grown up on.
Brian and Paul - What a great fishing time Gabriel and I had on Sat. How's Paul's nose? You guys are the best. The setting, the changing leaves, the camaraderie, the boat and the fishing was phenomenal. Little Gabriel was so satisfied that the whole way back to Ocean City all I did was hear about how you guys had 7 tuna on at a time and when fishing next could we go for them with you. He always wants one more cast and one more fish and of course my fishing is all about him. Thanks for the great day! I plan on coming again on the Christmas Holiday. I have fished with many charter captains, from Massachusetts to Florida, and Alaska. You and Bill are probably the best. That Tuna almost kicked my ass, I would have gladly handed off the rod to Joe Flynn if I had hooked up again. That Shimano Trevala rod & reel setup is incredible for the size.
